Planet Yoga is Iyengar Yoga

Planet Yoga is hatha yoga taught by certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher Tim Ruddy in the tradition of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. Tim has been a practitioner of Iyengar yoga since 1990 and a teacher from 1996 to present. He has taught in many cities and countries on this planet including San Francisco, Brasil, Toronto, India, and now Montréal.

Tim did his Iyengar Yoga teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco (IYISF) in 1999 and was certified by the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS) in 2003. Tim now resides and teaches Iyengar Yoga in Montréal, Quebec, Canada, and holds the Level 3 certification, the highest level of certification in Québec.

Having studied intensely asana, pranayama, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita in its many versions, anatomy & physiology Tim teaches from the foundation with precise instructions delivering the authenticity of Iyengar Yoga. Tim has studied directly with the Iyengars in India as well as other certified Iyengar yoga teachers in the western hemisphere. Tim’s influences outside the Iyengar family are Lois Steinberg, Zubin Zarthoshtimanesh, Louie Ettling, Donna Fornelli, Joe Naudzunas, Mahyar Raz, Paul Cabanis, Bramacharya Rudra Dev in Rishikesh, India.

Iyengar and now his grandaughter Abhijata in one of his several classes on offer. Be prepared to surrender that part of yourself you call “I” to fully grasp and absorb the steadiness of the asanas and pranayamas.

Something For Everyone

There’s something for everyone at Planet Yoga. We offer beginners classes, mixed level and intermediate level classes. The beginners’ classes are dynamic and quick-moving classes. The mixed-level classes always include headstand and shoulder stand and there is an exploration of new postures as well as deepening your understanding of familiar yoga poses. In the intermediate classes, again headstand and shoulder stand are always there but with the addition of variations. We also explore more intermediate level poses with a deeper understanding of the mechanics and with a deeper understanding of ourselves. Everyone is encouraged to work to their capacity in each class.

Authentic Iyengar Yoga

At Planet Yoga we follow the system from the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (the Iyengar headquarters in Pune, Maharashtra, India). This is a 4 week cycle of week 1 standing poses, week 2 sitting postures and forward bends, week 3 backbends, week 4 restorative and pranayama. The beginners classes don’t follow this system instead it is a course designed to prepare the body and mind for the mixed level and intermediate level postures.

Classes are taught with the safety of the practitioner in mind. Iyengar Yoga is a process of systematic intelligence. Foundation is key to Iyengar Yoga. Classes are prepared building poses on poses and classes on classes. Alternate postures are given for women who are on their menstrual cycle.

No matter your physical condition, fitness and yoga level, you will always have never-ending support and encouragement.

In Iyengar Yoga training we are taught to deal with a multitude of ailments, pregnancy, menstrual cycle, etc. So you will always feel safe participating in the general classes. Pregnant women and menstruating women are encouraged to let the teacher know at the start of the class so contraindicated poses can be modified or avoided.
